Collaborative Activities between BIOVERSITY/COGENT and Jamaica

1. Capacity Building
a) Technical assistance/expert advice
In 1997, one expert was sent to Jamaica on a technical assistance mission to help formulate a coconut regional project proposal for the LAC.
b) Training and human resources development
In 1997, the Regional STANTECH Training Course was held in Jamaica, participated in by eight coconut researchers from eight countries in the LAC.
Three local staff of collaborating agencies in the country underwent BIOVERSITY-COGENT-sponsored staff development training on such courses as STANTECH training of trainers, technical writing/ seminar presentation and proposal writing; Statistical Design and Germplasm x Environment Interaction Analysis Training Course; and Socioeconomics and Participatory Approaches to Reduce Poverty in Coconut Growing Communities.
c) COGENT meetings/workshops
In 1997 and 2002, Jamaica hosted two COGENT-sponsored meetings in Kingston.
2. Research Projects
Two projects were completed in the country, with the Coconut Industry Board (CIB) as the local implementing agency.
3. Financial Support and Funding
Donor funding support for projects in Jamaica amounts to US$ 61,883 provided by CFC and DFID, while national government counterpart financing amounts to US$ 48,133.
