COGENT International Thematic Action Group on Coconut breeding
Objectives
The coconut breeding in global terms is a great challenge. Coconut is a typical perennial crop, used in a range of regions and countries, with diversity of soil, climate, pests and diseases. The ITAG on coconut breeding has a fundamental role enabling enumerate the following main objectives:
1 - To facilitate germplasm exchanges and collecting, in order to increase the genetic diversity available in the different growing regions;
2 - To maximize efforts to assess the genetic variability available as well as the agronomic potential of the different accessions;
3 - To launch breeding experiments testing hybrids and other varieties, to be conducted in regional networks, targeted to the specific interests of the different growing regions. For such a noble mission, it is important that there is effective participation of breeders from different coconut growing regions.
The ITAG on coconut breeding will contribute to the developments of research proposals and actions aiming to achieve these objectives.
