1. Capacity Building
a) Technical assistance/expert advice
In 1994 and 2005, two experts were sent to China to assess the country’s R&D capability as well as to assist the national programme in identifying common problems, opportunities and projects for network collaboration; and assist the fabrication and installation of machineries and equipment for the production of high-value coconut products and train project participants in the production of coconut virgin oil and fibre-based products.
b) Training and human resources development
Four staffs of collaborating research institutions were sponsored by COGENT in 1999, 2001, 2006 and 2007 to undergo training in coconut data analysis and on the use of the STANTECH manual, technical writing/ seminar presentation and proposal writing; Socioeconomics and Participatory Approaches to Reduce Poverty in Coconut Growing Communities; and Markets and Market Development. Eight local staffs were trained on the production of coconut virgin oil and fibre-based products in 2005.
c) COGENT meetings/workshops
In 2007, one COGENT-initiated or –sponsored meeting or workshop was conducted in the country.
To date, there have been seven projects implemented in China, all spearheaded by the Coconut Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences.
ADB, IFAD and DFID provided funding for projects in China totaling US$ 54,553, with the national government giving counterpart financing of US$ 46,650.
