Collaborative Activities between BIOVERSITY/COGENT and Kiribati

1. Capacity Building
a) Technical assistance/expert advice
In 2000, one expert visited Kiribati to assist in coconut germplasm collecting, characterisation and conservation in Kiribati.
b) Training and human resources development
Two local coconut researchers were sponsored by BIOVERSITY-COGENT to undergo staff development training in 1996 and 1999 on the use of the STANTECH manual.
c) COGENT meetings/workshops
No BIOVERSITY-COGENT –sponsored or –initiated meetings or workshops have been held in the country.
2. Research Projects
So far, only one project was carried out in the country, implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Development.
3. Financial Support and Funding
Donor funding support for the coconut project in Kiribati amounts to US$11,000, provided by ADB; while national government counterpart financing for the same amounts to US$6,875.
