Collaborative Activities between BIOVERSITY/COGENT and Ghana

1. Capacity Building

a) Technical assistance/expert advice
In 1998, one expert visited Ghana to identify research and development needs and to formulate an Africa/Indian Ocean coconut regional project proposal.

b) Training and human resources development
To date, no COGENT-sponsored training course has been held in the country.

On the other hand, three staffs of collaborating research institutions were sponsored by COGENT to attend the Regional STANTECH Trainer’s Course in Africa; the technical writing/ seminar presentation and proposal writing; Socioeconomics; Production of Coconut Shell Handicrafts; and Participatory Approaches to Reduce Poverty in Coconut Growing Communities; and Markets and Market Development.

c) COGENT meetings/workshops
No COGENT –sponsored or –initiated meetings or workshops have been held in the country.

 

2. Research Projects

To date, two projects has been carried out in Ghana, which relates to the establishment of a framework and the selection of project sites for the nationwide deployment of coconut-based poverty reduction interventions in coconut growing communities in the country. The projects were implemented by Coconut Programme of the Oil Palm Research Institute.

 

3. Financial Support and Funding

Donor funding for the abovementioned projects were provided by DFID and IFAD for US$ 21,540, with the national government providing counterpart funding of US$ 19,000.
